Dental Insurance 101

In a few short weeks, we will say goodbye to 2019 and hello to 2020, with that change also comes changes in dental insurance.  Most of you have a dental insurance policy that will renew January 1 and you will gain access to your full benefits again.

Dental insurance is not like any other insurance in that they do not cover the full service once there is a need. A typical dental coverage is 100%-80%-50%. They will cover 100% of preventative and diagnostic (cleanings, exams, fluoride treatments, x-rays). Insurance will cover 80% of basic care to include fillings, non-routine x-rays, extractions, sealants and certain periodontal treatments.  Dental treatments, such as crowns, dentures, bridges, surgical extractions are considered major and covered at 50%.

Dental plans do have a deductible which is a set amount you must pay before you receive any benefits, this sometimes comes out of the preventative services.  There will almost always be 12 month waiting period before you can get reimbursed for major procedures such as crowns or root canals. Remember too that dental insurance often will not pay to restore teeth that were missing before you purchased the policy, or work that was underway prior to the policy going into effect.

Dental insurance can be very beneficial to a patient and we are happy to walk thru your plan with you if you have questions.

We want you to make the right choice on treatment due to your needs and benefits.

Wish you a happy and healthy end of 2019!
