Why are regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays necessary?

Much like regular maintenance on your car, your teeth require regular maintenance too. Dental exams let Dr Wietholder evaluate your oral health, check for signs of oral cancer and look for any problematic areas involving your teeth and gums. Regular cleanings are necessary to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. While brushing and flossing can be effective at removing most plaque, tartar can still form and requires removal by a dental hygienist. It is recommended to see your hygienist and receive a dental exam every six months.

X-rays are recommended once per year to allow Dr. Wietholder to see cavities between the teeth while they are still small and easily fixed. X-rays are a very important diagnostic tool in dentistry. They help Dr. Wietholder assess the health of the teeth by allowing him to see things like cavities, infections and bone loss. At All American Dental, we use digital x-rays which require less radiation than conventional x-rays. The images are available for Dr. Wietholder to view immediately on the computer screen.

It is important to remember that the small risk from dental x-rays is outweighed by the information they provide Dr. Wietholder so he can diagnose your specific dental needs. It is important to note that there are many natural sources of radiation in our daily lives. Things such as sunlight, wireless devices, and airplane flights all cause us to be exposed to radiation. Dental x-rays are no worse than any of these things. Our digital sensors are very sensitive and require minimal radiation.

Remember early detection is key! Call All American Dental in Columbia, MO to schedule your routine cleaning, exam, and x-rays.
